History of karate training

Karate is one of the most widely practised forms of martial arts around the globe today. It was heavily publicised and familiarised with the martial arts movies of the 1960s and 1970s and the Western martial arts television drama series like Kung Fu. Karate origins are humble and accidental, developing in the Ryukyu Kingdom from the indigenous Ryukyuan martial arts in what is now Okinawa, far from mainland Japan. It began as a purpose of self-defence and a standard fighting system of unarmed combat among the Pechin class of the Ryukyuans. The Chinese martial arts majorly influenced the Ryukyuans and came into contact within the 14th century after establishing a trade relationship with the Ming dynasty. Karate came to mainland Japan in the 20th century during migration for work purposes and cultural exchange between the Japanese and the Ryukyuans, receiving popularity in the Japanese universities with the establishment of the 'karate club' in 1924 at Keio University.

Karate is a self-defence discipline and also a striking art that involves punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes, open hand techniques and palm-heel strikes. Grappling (wrestle), throws, joint locks, restraints, and vital point strikes are also taught in some styles.

Why is Karate important in daily life?

Like many other martial arts forms of the East, Karate is a discipline that aims to tame the body in sequence with the mind. The revered karate master Shoshin Nagamine has said, "Karate-do may be referred to as the conflict within yourself, or a life-long marathon which can be won only through self-discipline, hard training, and your own creative efforts". It is the perfect path to the journey of confidence and self-realisation, to understand own potential and limitations of one's body and overcome them with discipline, training and dedication, which are all attributes of the mind. It cultivates the much-needed characteristics of self-confidence, self-defense (self-defence), self-esteem, self-motivation and concentration and helps relieve stress levels.

Immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture with Shito Ryu Karate in Melbourne at Sabu karate Dojo

Sabu Karate Academy follows the Shito-Ryu method of karate, founded in 1931 by Kenwa Mabuni. Mabuni was one of the great masters of karate who was well known for his encyclopaedic knowledge of kata and the applications of bunkai. He was considered the foremost authority of the Okinawan kata. He was one of the leading figures to popularise this karate form in Japan. As a police officer, he trained many local law enforcement officers and started karate teaching in many schools. Even though Mabuni was deeply traditional, he recognised the value of karate in the global arena. He was innovative and a visionary who realised the potential in areas of non-traditional karate. For example, he was the first master designing a kata exclusively for women's self-defence, called the Aoyagi.

In Shito Ryu karate, practitioners study the unique karate styles of Naha-te, Shuri-te and Tomari-te, the predecessors from traditional karate to modern types of karate. As a style, Shito-Ryu follows the aspect of combination, attempting to unite the diverse roots of karate. It combines physical strength and long powerful stances with circular and eight-directional movements and breathing power. It is swift but still artistic and decisive. It incorporates the five rules of self-defence developed by Kenwa Mabuni. In Modern Shito-Ryu, the emphasis is on sparring and speed, explicitly focusing on many forms currently in practice.

Improves fitness level

Karate is a great workout for the entire body. It helps utilise every muscle, and regular training will improve oxygen circulation, overall cardiovascular, core strength, health, endurance and balance.

Stress Relief

Karate lessons can do wonders for motivation and purpose. Distraction from problems, general self-efficacy, and socialisation can eliminate stress and help people operate with a more positive outlook. Increased blood circulation to the brain has reduced mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

Increases Flexibility

As we get older, we get less flexible. It can cause many issues as we continually struggle with mobility. With each karate technique, you will have increased flexibility and mobility, leading to many health benefits. It will also reduce muscle soreness and fatigue. Once you've practised karate for a few months, you'll notice that you can recover much quicker.

Improves Muscle Tone

It is a trend that children and young adults lift weights to improve muscle tone. But being too muscular can often be a disadvantage in martial arts as it can reduce your speed and increase fatigue. Karate will give you a perfect muscle definition all over your body like punching and kicking require plenty of strength. Even though you won't get big muscles with karate, they will become well-toned and incredibly efficient. Karate will help to improve balance and increase your metabolism.

Focus and Mindfulness

One great thing about karate is its emphasis on mental well-being and how it affects performance. At the dojo, you will be focused only on karate. When you have trained in karate long enough will know that you are more likely to learn how not to fight than you are to learn how to fight.
